The water aerobics classes offered by Shannondale since January 2023 continue to be a fan favorite. And they have a positive impact on its residents, both physically and mentally. The classes are led by Sabrina Gray, Fitness and Wellness Manager. Participants are enthusiastic about their fitness journey and many wish more residents took advantage of the classes. A regular, Verna McLain, shared, “The pool is not used by many people.” In its article linked here, experts encourage people to “take the plunge and try this low-impact workout that builds muscle strength and boosts your endurance. It's fun, and it can be as challenging as you like.”

Teacher Impact

Sabrina Gray is highly regarded by the participants for her ability to plan age-appropriate exercises and ensure that each class runs smoothly. Sabrina shares, “I have witnessed people overcome their fear of water and increase their tolerance for physical activity through water aerobics.”Kate Allen says, “Sabrina obviously puts a lot of advance planning in for her classes, as each class flows smoothly, even though each one is different, and each class begins and ends on time.” Another resident and class participant Ruth Smith says, “Sabrina pushes and inspires us to move the best we can. She is quite a motivator.”

Physical Benefits

The physical benefits of water aerobics for seniors are well-documented. Participants reported feeling good about themselves and their lifestyle improvements after each class. The exercises performed during the sessions focus on strengthening the upper and lower extremities, improving joint range of motion, enhancing balance, engaging in breathing activities, practicing aquatic Tai Chi and interval training. Water aerobics provides a safe and effective way for seniors to improve their balance, strength and joint flexibility. Sabrina shares that water aerobics “gives the body feedback andproprioception (the sense that lets us perceive the location, movement, and action of parts of the body) needed to soothe the body and nervous system.”McLain shares, “Every part of your body is exercised, and you feel wonderful when you get out [of the water] especially when you can get in the fabulous hot tub after the class. Exercises are easier in the water. You do not have to be a swimmer to participate because the pool is four feet deep.”

Mental Benefits

Apart from the physical benefits, water aerobics also has mental advantages. Participants experience exercises that challenges both the body and the mind. The classes offer exercise diversity, preventing boredom and requiring brain flexibility. Engaging in water aerobics can be enjoyable and stimulating and, improve overall well-being.Allen shares “Many of the exercises challenge the mind, too, by requiring brain flexibility; so not only is the body being exercised, but the mind is, too!” Ruth Smith adds, “After a class, I may be tired, but I feel good about myself, that I have done something to improve my lifestyle which is pretty much sedentary.”

Social Benefits

Water aerobics classes at Shannondale also provide social benefits. The group atmosphere creates a sense of community and encourages social interaction. Participants have reported having fun, laughing, and enjoying each other's company during the classes. This social aspect helps decrease feelings of isolation and depression, contributing to an overall sense of well-being.The availability of water aerobics classes and the positive experiences shared by participants have made them a significant asset for Shannondale. The classes have not only improved the physical health and mental well-being of the residents but have also fostered a supportive and enjoyable community within the facility. Allen says, “The classes are fun, and we get in a lot of laughter as well as exercise. Exercising in the water is easier on the arthritic joints of elders with wisdom, and exercising in the community is much more fun!”Calling all Shannondale residents, grab your swimsuit and adventurous spirit, and join a water aerobics class.
